Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Werner Delfmann

Vita

After his studies of Mathematics and Business Administration, Werner Delfmann graduated in 1974 with a Diploma in Mathematics at the University of Münster, Germany and started to work as a research and teaching assistant at the Institute for Industrial Corporate Planning. He received his Ph.D. (Dr. rer. pol.) in 1976 and, after several years as assistant professor, achieved the Habilitation for Business Administration in 1982. After holding a position as guest professor at the University of Osnabrück in 1983/4 he took over the Chair of Production and Marketing at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt a. M. in 1985. Since 1988 he has been Full Professor and Director of the Department of Business Policy and Logistics within the Faculty of Economics, Management, and Social Sciences at the University of Cologne. In 1999 he additionally became Director of the Institute of Trade Fair Management. From 1999 until 2001 he was Dean of the Faculty and from 2003 to 2006 Academic Director of the Center for Continuous Education. From January 2007 to the end of 2009 Werner Delfmann again held the position as Dean of the Faculty and until 2010 the position as Vize-Dean for International Relationships. From 1999 until 2003 Prof. Delfmann was Chairman of CEMS, the global network of 25 leading management schools and more than 50 international companies. In 2004 he was awarded with an honorary doctorate (Dr. h.c.) from the Corvinus University in Budapest, Hungary.

Prof. Delfmann has held several international positions, among others as visiting professor at the University of Vienna (1992), the ASEAN-European Management Center in Brunei Darussalam (1997), the National University of Singapore (2002), the University of British Columbia in Vancouver (2005), and the University of Sydney (2006 and 2007) where he holds a position as adjunct professor since 2008. Werner Delfmann has been an invited lecturer at renowned universities, e.g. HEC Paris, Stockholm School of Economics, Copenhagen Business School, and Asian Institute of Management (AIM) Manila. Furthermore, he has been acting as lecturer and scientific coordinator at several institutions for executive management education, e.g. at GSBA Zurich, ISA/HEC Paris and USW Germany and was Academic Director of the Global Executive MBA Program (GEM) from 2003 to 2006. He has also been member of the International Advisory Boards of Group HEC, Paris and Corvinus University, Budapest.

Prof. Delfmann has been founder and head of national and international working-groups in strategic management and logistics with academics and senior executives. He is a member of numerous scientific organizations and management associations, e.g. chairman of the scientific committee of the German Logistics Association (BVL), member of the research committee of the European Logistics Association (ELA), and member of the German Society for Business Administration (SG-DGfB). Furthermore Prof. Delfmann has close relationships with leading companies in industry and trade by holding mandates as counselor, consultant and member of the supervisory board.

Main Research Interests

Prof. Delfmann’s main fields of research are Strategic and International Management, Global Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Management of Logistics Service Providers, Aviation Management, Trade Fair Management. He has published or edited 10 books and more than 100 scientific articles. Furthermore he has been member of the board or editorial board of several scientific journals, e.g. European Business Forum, Logistics Research, Business Research, DBW (Die Betriebswirtschaft) and reviewer for several national and international research funding institutions.
